Wolf Moon

Many cultures have a name for the full moon, January’s moon is Wolf Moon because it is said that you can hear the cries of hungry wolves drifting through the forest.  Even a top predator like the wolf faces starvation in the harsh conditions of a cold January night.

I have lived in northern Quebec and Manitoba.  Tucked safe in my bed I could hear the howls of the wolf.  The sound was almost hypnotic.  I would let them sing me to sleep. It wasn’t until I was older that I found out why January’s Moon is called the Wolf Moon, I was enjoying the cries of hunger.

My painting Wolf Moon is 12 x 16 acrylic.  It depicts 2 wolves out hunting on the night of the full moon in January, with no luck so far, they are famished.

The temperature is below minus 20 degrees Celsius.

Miles away you could hear the rest of the pack start to howl, and both wolves immediately started running toward them.  Did the rest of the pack have success and are now calling these 2 wolves back to enjoy the feast?

A winter night in the forest is a cold and mysterious place, we will never have an answer to that question.
